PARIS, 1830.
A young nun named Catherine Labouré saw Our Lady standing on a globe, hands open, light streaming from her fingers. Around the vision, words: O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. The vision turned, and Catherine saw the reverse — a cross above the letter M, twelve stars, two hearts. Then instructions: have a medal struck to this design.
It was struck two years later, and within a decade people were calling it the Miraculous Medal. Nearly two centuries on, the design has never been altered. The medal at the center of this bracelet carries it exactly: Our Lady of Grace on the front, the crowned M and twelve stars on the reverse, the prayer around the border.
